La Sierra Mixe, part II

We drive into the land of the fog, its hillsides riven by cascades. Juan Carlos stops so often we’ve seen ten waterfalls already and we are hours away from our destination. There are no other cars on the road. One truck passes slowly and stops. The driver has a word with Juan Carlos to see what we’re doing. “This guy here always sticks his nose into everyone’s business, and he’s just a kid,” Juan Carlos tells us. Since the illegal mine was shut down, local people eye strangers with caution.

“He knows I’m from San Pedro, and he should just keep his mouth shut,” Juan Carlos says as we drive on.
